Young Persons Healthcare Centre

The Young Persons Resource Centre named 'Everybody' is a new centre for young people aged 14-24 in Blackburn town centre. The centre offers a wide variety of confidential services supporting young people's health and wellbeing all under one roof.

Colour has the ability to stimulate positive emotional reactions, thereby promoting the conditions for recovery. Every colour stimulates us in a different way and consequently can be used to make an environment feel less intimidating. This project for Blackburn and Darwen PCT NHS has explored just this in order to create an uplifting and calming environment to enhancing wellbeing.

Working with Lime Arts the project sought to improve wellbeing through the built environment. The project was initiated last November by a one day healthcare workshop with Blackburn College in which young people played an active part in the design of the new facilities. The workshop included creating a full scale model of the waiting room which enabled young people to fully visualise the space and walk through it. The workshop process conveyed that young people felt colour could help to create a strong visual identity to each healthcare waiting room space.

The resulting environment the Everybody Centre situated within the new Barbara Castle Way Health Centre in Central Blackburn is a fresh and welcoming space with each private consultation waiting room taking its own colour identity enabling young people a choice dependant on their mood.

The accompanying reception area and waiting room, carry through the colour palette of the pods with bright cues present within wall decoration and seating. The fun nature of the environment has been designed to appeal to young people and help remove the stigma associated with hospital environments.
